Runnymede Swimming Club operates 3 levels of training squad to provide clear aspirational targets for swimmers as they progress. Clearly it is important that a swimmer’s progression does not outstrip their ability, and therefore promotion to the next level is strictly at the discretion of the coaches. However, places in each of the squads are regularly assessed and swimmers are promoted frequently.
For more information on the club, its ethos, its commitment to the swimmers and its expectations of swimmers in return, please see our club pages above.
The Development Squads are usually a swimmer’s first experience of focussed and structured swim training. Once basic swimming techniques and stamina have been developed through our excellent Swim School, swimmers are introduced to the Development Squads where they can expand their skills to other strokes and start to work on that all important stamina and self-motivation.
The Development Squads are split into two smaller squads, based on ability level; Silver and Gold.
3 Silver Development Squad sessions are available each week, a total of up to 2.5 hours per week swimming time

The Junior Squad represents a step up from the Development Squads in the nature and length of the training sessions. Swimmers will be expected to be more independent, self-motivated and willing to just get on with the training. Swimmers in the Junior Squad have one eye on the Senior Squad, with an aspiration to achieve.
4 Junior Squad sessions are available each week, a total of up to 6 hours per week swimming time

Whilst there is a clear progression path to reach the Senior Squad, it is even more important here than the other squads that the swimmer is ready to take the step up. Therefore promotion to the Senior Squad is very much at the discretion of the coaches.
As you will see from the training times below, being a member of the Senior Squad is a significant step-up in commitment both from the swimmer and the parents. This is not to be taken lightly.
6 available sessions – 10.25 hours per week

There is an additional weekly Land training session which is advised separately.
Moving in and around these three squads is our Competition Squads. The Competition Squads are merely an extension of their respective Junior and Senior squads designed for swimmers with at least one County qualifying time (excluding 50m events) in their respective age groups who wish to train and compete in various open galas. Positions in the Competition Squads are allocated by our coaching team and are based on ability, age and last but far from least, the swimmer’s dedication to both the sport of swimming and Runnymede Swimming Club.
The Masters sessions are for swimmers over 18-years old of all abilities, providing lanes for the social swimmer, up to the full competitive swimmer undertaking a structured training program. There are 3 morning sessions dedicated to Masters swimming, but this does not stop the more competitive older swimmer from training with the other squads if they wish to.
